
Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam
The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) is a major Indian political party based in Tamil Nadu. Founded by C. N. Annadurai in 1949, it emerged from the Dravidian movement and emphasizes social justice, self-respect, equality, secularism, federalism, state autonomy and Tamil linguistic and cultural interests.

C. N. Annadurai founded the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam on 17 September 1949 at Robinson Park in Royapuram, Chennai.
- 1957First electoral participation
DMK entered electoral politics and contested the Madras State Assembly and Lok Sabha elections.
- 1962Growth in electoral politics
DMK expanded its representation in the Madras State Assembly and Lok Sabha.
- 1965Anti-Hindi agitation
DMK played a major role in the anti-Hindi agitation in Tamil Nadu and strengthened its support around language and state-rights issues.
- 1967First DMK government
DMK won the 1967 Tamil Nadu Assembly election and C. N. Annadurai became Chief Minister, ending Congress dominance in the state.
- 1969Karunanidhi becomes party president
After Annadurai's death, M. Karunanidhi assumed leadership of the DMK and became party president.
- 1971Second major Assembly victory
DMK secured a strong victory in the 1971 Tamil Nadu Assembly election under M. Karunanidhi.
- 1972AIADMK split
M. G. Ramachandran left DMK and founded the AIADMK, creating the principal rival Dravidian party in Tamil Nadu.
- 1976Government dismissed
The DMK state government was dismissed during the Emergency period.
- 1989Return to power
DMK returned to power in Tamil Nadu with M. Karunanidhi as Chief Minister.
- 1996Major electoral victory
DMK won a decisive victory in the 1996 Tamil Nadu Assembly election.

DMK became part of the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance at the Union level.

DMK joined the Congress-led UPA alliance and won all 16 Lok Sabha seats it contested in Tamil Nadu.
