Elected as a municipal councillor in Agra and subsequently served as chief whip of the councillor group.

Held organisational responsibilities including city-level minister and general secretary roles in the BJP organisation.

Won the newly created Agra South Assembly constituency in the 2012 Uttar Pradesh Assembly election and entered the 16th Legislative Assembly.

Re-elected from Agra South in the 2017 Assembly election, beginning his second consecutive Assembly term.

Served as chief whip of the BJP legislative party during the 17th Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly.

Served as a member of the Public Undertakings and Corporations Committee of the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly.

Won Agra South for the third consecutive time in the 2022 Assembly election and entered the 18th Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly.

Joined the Yogi Adityanath government as a Cabinet Minister and was assigned the Higher Education portfolio.

Held Science & Technology and Electronics & Information Technology portfolios in addition to Higher Education until the March 2024 cabinet reshuffle.

Continues as the Uttar Pradesh Higher Education Minister while serving as the sitting MLA from Agra South.
